A coastal home, drawn from the landscape

The existing weatherboard house forms the starting point for a new Surf Coast extension shaped by its natural setting. Rather than competing with the original home, the addition establishes a clear contemporary identity while remaining connected to the scale and simplicity of the existing weatherboard form.

The material palette takes its cues directly from the surrounding landscape. Deep red earth tones are carried through the metal cladding, while exposed concrete, timber and native planting bring warmth, texture and a sense of permanence. The architecture is intentionally robust and understated, designed to sit comfortably within its coastal setting rather than feel imposed upon it.

The transition between old and new is deliberately legible, with the original weatherboard retained as a familiar reference point and the new addition expressed as a more solid, elemental form. Openings are positioned to frame the landscape and strengthen the relationship between the interior, garden and broader coastal environment.

Story was engaged to develop a full concept package for the project, exploring the overall form, planning, material palette and character of the addition. The design is still evolving, with more to come as the project progresses.
